What To Know When You’re Experiencing Abuse

If someone you care about is considering suicide, please visit the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline  or call or text 988 any time, day or night.

No one deserves to be abused. If you are experiencing financial, emotional, sexual or physical abuse in an intimate or family relationship, you deserve help and support. For more information on ways that the SACFL can support you in finding safety and healing, call our hotline.

Knowing Survivor’s Rights

It is unlawful in New York State to discriminate against survivors of domestic violence. As survivors of the various spectrums of intimate and family violence, it’s important that you know your rights (KYR) . As supporters of those in vulnerable populations, advocating for these rights makes a world of difference and can lead to a lifetime of change!

For a full documentation of these rights from the New York State Office of Victim Services, please see this complete booklet .
Here are the key takeaways:

  • You have a right to fair housing
  • You have a right to fair treatment at work
  • You have a right to confidentiality to prevent retaliation
  • You have additional rights under certain Federal and Local programs.

For those who are in the immigration process regardless of documentation, here are Spanish oriented Know Your Rights resources as they relate to safety planning, intimate & family violence, and the challenges of legality.
